GUTSY Lancaster City grabbed an unexpected point at high-flying Droylesden on Monday night - and it could have been more.

The Dolly Blues worked hard for a point in what was anything but a boring 0-0 draw. And they had the chances to have taken all three points.

The build-up to the game was anything but smooth for City, with the team bus breaking down en route and the kick off delayed as a result.

Then Peter Thomson picked up an injury early on to further hamper the cause.

But City defended well throughout and played intelligently on the break to give themselves the better of the goal-scoring opportunities over 90 minutes.

The first of them fell to Farrell Kilbane after only six minutes, but his shot following a corner was cleared off the line.

Thomson also got a sight of goal in the opening exchanges but shot wide on the turn before Droylesden registered their first attempt on 18 minutes.

Substitute Ryan Elderton was only inches away from giving the Blues the lead on 45 minutes, heading narrowly over the bar.

Ricky Mercer was next in line, forcing home keeper Paul Phillips to a fine diving save on 53 minutes as the game switched from end to end.

And though The Bloods had their chances as well, City were always good value for a point - the first Droylesden have dropped at home in 2004.
