DAREDEVIL sports enthusiasts have given their backing for a new skate park in Leyland.

About 63 fans of in-line roller blading, skateboarding and BMX biking completed a survey about the proposed plan for a permanent skate park in South Ribble.

Supporters of the popular sports joined police, and council chiefs from South Ribble and the county council's youth and community service for discussions about creating a permanent facility in Leyland.

People of all ages took part in the survey, held at an event at Leyland Leisure Centre on Sunday. And the youngsters braved pouring rain to show off their skills to the officials.

Alison Hatton, community safety co-ordinator for the project, said: "The findings will help us to pinpoint what services are needed for a facility like this.

"With 63 completed forms, we now have a good number of people's views to formulate a plan which the youngsters are interested in."

The skate park group is actively looking at areas the size of two tennis courts across Leyland which can offer a secure base in a safe environment, and various possible sites are currently being considered. Mrs Hatton said: "Most of the youngsters said they thought the skate park should be indoors to protect it from vandals and the weather, but they wanted a facility which would be able to test their blading, skating and riding skills to the limit."

The 12 to19-year-olds, who are members of the skate park group, also backed the plans to have cafe facilities available.

The project is looking for financial backing and anybody who wants to offer their help can contact Mrs Hutton on 01772 625337.
