TALENTED singer David Kidd has never forgotten his roots.

The 33-years-old vocalist with a big voice -- and his eye on stardom -- was an apprentice decorator when his talent was spotted 15 years ago by Leigh Miners' concert secretary, Tommy Higgins and his artiste wife, Betty Taylor.

Now, as thanks to the couple, David, also a great vocal impressionist, is bringing his show, The David Kidd Spectacular, to the Twist Lane club on October 7.

Hailed by his manager as the next Joe Longthorn, David, has two record deals pending and offers of work on cruise ships and West End musicals in the offing.

Born at Firs Maternity Home in Leigh, the former Leigh St Peter's and Leigh CE High pupil lives in Beaumaris Close in the Firs Lane area with his wife Tracy and they have a seven-years-old daughter, Lucy.

Always a keen singer David started performing as a youngster at the Miners when Tommy asked appearing artists if they'd let the lad have a go.

From there he took him on shop windows to other clubs and he started getting bookings of his own. He has now played the local scene for 12 years, turning pro three years ago.

The road to fame started a year ago when he teamed up with Jeanne Gray of the Select Entertainment and Management Agency.

She said: "As soon as I heard the rich quality of his commercial voice I knew he had what it takes to make it big. He'll definitely make it. He's the next Joe Longthorn."

David, who also does a Tom Jones tribute show, has expanded his vocal impressions to include Enrique Iglesias, Elvis, Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra, David Bowie and Brian Ferry.

He said: "The Tom Jones tribute developed from requests at clubs, but I've always really just wanted to be me."

Now he is hoping to sell his show with the David Kidd Experience and is discussing which song he should record. He is currently considering a little known Elvis number "Sound of Your Cry".

A natural singer who has never had a day's coaching in his life, David has won many competitions and his talent is wowing audiences at home and abroad.

But he is now looking forward to his show at the Miners where he will be accompanied by his own band and supported by female vocalist Jodie Robbins and comedian Dave Baron.

There will also be a raffle in aid of Macmillan Nurses and tickets are available at £5 from the club or call 07721943030.
