IT'S sometimes said that two wheels are better than four and Mikron Theatre Company is set to prove that's the case in a new play called Pedal Power.

Written and directed by Richard Povall, who toured with Mikron for nine years as an actor and musician, Pedal Power tells the entertaining story of the National Clarion Cycling Club.

A genial, gentle and good-humoured play with original songs and music, Pedal Power takes us back to the 1890s when the bicycle was king of the road and the Clarion Cycling Club was founded, through the war years and into the racing days of the '50s.

It recalls a form of transport that was once a way of life for thousands of ordinary men and women and which -- though reduced in numbers -- survives to this day.

From Sunday club runs to time trials, from cloth caps to helmets and from worsted to lycra, Pedal Power freewheels down the years with a hundred saddle-sore but laughing Clarionettes.

Mikron Theatre Company's four talented actor-musicians, Peter Toon, Marianne McNamara, Elizabeth Eves and Robert Took, show their versatility by playing a dozen instruments including cello, violin, flute, euphonium, guitar, trumpet, keyboard and accordion.

Pedal Power will be staged at Oakhill College, Wiswell Lane, Whalley on Wednesday October 6 at 7.30pm. Tickets at £3 are available on the door.
