A CONVOY of tractors through the streets of Simister made an impressive sight for villagers recently.
But making good use of the farm vehicles for protest reasons is not a new concept for Simister.
The latest protest was against a potential business park in nearby Bowlee, Middleton, when about 150 villagers carried banners with the slogan "Save Our Countryside".
They were joined by horseriders, dog walkers and local farmers with their tractors.
Back in 1974, Simister farmers made the headlines when they joined a massed demonstration in Bury as part of a nationwide protest by farmers who wanted the Government to produce a coherent pricing policy for food produced by British farming.
Their convoy travelled from Simister to Bury, through Whitefield, and included nine tractors, an assortment of waggons, muck spreaders and a potato harvesting machine.
