WHEN a Bury pub tapped into the interest of real ale enthusiasts, it went down a treat.

About 60 beer lovers were at the Rose and Crown in Manchester Old Road to find out how their favourite tipples are made.

Suffolk brewers Adnams sent their representatives to give a talk on the brewing of cask ales, from the malt shovel to the pump.

They followed this with a question and answer session, along with an illuminating demonstration of the "tapping and venting" process using a glass barrel.

Customers were able to sample the merchandise, and did a real ale quiz and buffet.

And added entertainment came from the Horwich Prize Medal Morris Men, who gave an dancing performance in the street.

Landlord Ken Sumner, who has run the pub for a year, said: "It was a fantastic evening and the regulars cannot stop talking about it. We managed to empty two barrels, which shows how much interest there was."
