A CHURCH has had its prayers answered with permission for its grade II listed building to be converted into flats.
The application for a major redevelopment at Heaton Park Congregational Church was passed by councillors last Tuesday.
Developers plan to convert the existing church building in Newtown Street into 16 flats and demolish a clubhouse to the rear.
It will make way for a new church and community building, with seven apartments upstairs.
In recent years, the 123-year-old church has seen congregation numbers fall and has suffered from a lack of funding for essential improvements.
Members of the planning control committee were told on Tuesday that the proposals would benefit both the church and surrounding area.
Committee member Keith Grime said: "The church is in a very bad state of repair and as a resident of Prestwich I am very glad about this proposal.
"I think it will certainly enhance the area."
