THE public toilets at Clitheroe Castle park were to be judged in the annual search for Britain's top toilet after being nominated for the Loo of the Year competition by one impressed user. The contest was set up to find the UK's superloos which not only looked good, but were well looked after by users.

A TRIAL at Burnley Crown Court was halted for more than an hour when the defendant appeared drunk in the dock.

Judge Mary Holt said the hearing should not continue until the man knew what was going on. He was detained in custody until he sobered up to face a charge of assault. Prison guards were ordered to give him a helping hand by supplying lots of strong black coffee.

LANCASHIRE'S 290,000 cotton and rayon workers were given a pay rise.

The six per cent increase put between an extra 6s to 14s in employees pay packets.

Although cotton unions had asked for a 10 per cent rise to cover the increased cost of living they were said to be surprised and very pleased by the offer.

Tom Seed, secretary of Great Harwood Weavers, said it was "an agreeable surprise".
