A MAN is fighting for his life in intensive care after becoming the victim of a vicious assault at Blackpool bus station.

The unnamed 22-year-old was yesterday in a "poorly but stable" condition with serious head injuries at Blackpool Victoria Hospital following the incident at the resort's Talbot Road bus station at around 7.30pm on Tuesday, September 28.

Police believe the victim and his attacker were part of a large group of youths who had assembled at the bus station to drink alcohol. Police and paramedics arrived at the scene after a member of the public witnessed the assault and contacted the emergency services operator.

A 17-year-old male youth was arrested a short time later on Dickson Road. At time of going to press he was being held for questioning without charge.

Leading the investigation, Detective Inspector Andy Webster, said there had been a "huge amount of information" from passers-by who had witnessed the attack. But he appealed for anybody else who could have seen or heard anything to come forward.

Detective Inspector Webster said: "It appears that there has been some sort of row between a group of youths who had been drinking in the bus station.

"Unfortunately it resulted in a vicious assault which involved the victim having his head kicked and stamped upon.

"A youth was arrested a short time later in connection with the incident and he is currently being held for questioning.

"So far we've had a lot of information from members of the public which has proven to be vital to the investigation.

"Because the incident happened at such a busy time of the evening we are confident many more people will have been walking or driving past who would have seen or heard something.

"We would urge these people to get in contact with us immediately as they may be holding vital information."

Anyone with information is asked to contact Crimestoppers on 0800 555111 or Blackpool Police on 01253 293933 quoting crime log number 266WQ/2809.
