HOW pleasing that Westfield's decision to abandon their plans to re-site Bury market was achieved without resorting to the "Rent-a-Mob" tactics feared by council leader John Byrne and deputy leader, Wayne Campbell.
How ironic, also, that they start to "listen" when Labour's majority in the council chamber is eroded. Let us hope they continue to listen.
The hard work carried out by the indoor and open market traders' committees has brought about this unexpected result. Thanks are due to everyone who helped behind the scenes, to the traders who stood as candidates in the local elections -- which showed just how determined we were to get the message across -- and especially to the 50,000 shoppers who signed letters in support of our campaign.
PETER RICHARDSON,
hon. secretary,
Bury Open Market
Traders Association.
