I HAD a good laugh when I read a recent article headlined "Buses to be equipped with space-age technology".

Russell Gard, First's commercial director for Manchester, talks about an "in-depth picture of the journey experience" - a term which is a joke to the travelling public.

My "in-depth journey experience" on Christmas Eve consisted of travelling the 524 route on a model which surely had been taken out of the Transport Museum. It must have been 100 years old, clapped-out, bone-shaking, and a challenge for the driver to change gear. The seats were filthy and stained, and a "journey experience" all too common on this route.

If Mr Gard really wants an "in-depth journey experience" he doesn't need to spend a fortune on "space-age technology", he just needs to travel the 524 Bury to Bolton route occasionally.
