GREATER Manchester Police (GMP) is leading the way nationally with the largest increase of arrests than any other force across the country.
New figures show that GMP has achieved a 17 per cent increase in arrests for 2003/4, 12,172 more compared to the previous year.
Arrests have topped 82,596 in the 12-month period, following increased targeting of alcohol-related violence, robbery, burglary and other violent crimes across the county. Nationally, arrests rose by one per cent.
Greater Manchesters Chief Constable Michael Todd said: "These latest statistics again demonstrate the success and determination of GMP and its partners in reducing crime and bringing offenders to justice. This has been achieved by a continued focus on violent crimes directly affecting our communities and those prolific and priority offenders causing them.
"However, we are not complacent and will continue to build upon the good work we have already done. We are taking the fight against crime to the criminals to ensure that we improve community life."
