RADCLIFFE Boro boss Kevin Glendon has boosted his squad this week with two more signings ahead of Saturday's clash with league leaders, Workington.

"We've brought in ex-Bury player Paul O'Shaughnessy," he announced.

"We first approached him last summer but he wanted to have a look around, which is pretty normal for a lad in his position.

"When players leave league clubs they often don't know what to do, they rush around and try to get a similar deal to what they had.

"Sometimes it works out for them, sometimes it doesn't and they can lose a year's worth of football while they sort themselves out.

"Paul's had plenty of time to look around but things haven't worked out for him and now he's ready to give it a go with us.

"He obviously needs to work on his fitness but we'll try and get him involved in as many games as we can; we'll start him on the bench and try and get him on as much as we can."

It has been a busy couple for weeks for Glendon, as he has also signed former Ashton United right winger, Craig Fleury.

"We've missed a wide right player since we lost Lee Duffy and we hope he will fit in that position," he said.

"He likes to run at people and he seems a good lad, it will be interesting to see how he does for us."

Apart from injured players Lee Duffy and Andy Heald all he wants now is an on-field general.

"We've drawn too many games this season and that has been due to the fact that I haven't had out on the pitch an experienced head who could translate to the rest of the team exactly what I want them to do.

"We need someone with a bit of experience to run things, we had that in Gordon Armstrong and since he left we have missed that kind of player and so we are definitely looking to bring in at least one player of that ilk.

"We need an experienced lad who is used to winning, someone who knows what it takes to get into that frame of mind and then help the players around him acquire it. If I can get a player like that it would help tremendously."

That lack of leadership was evident last Saturday when Boro let slip a 2-0 half-time lead and had to make do with a 2-2 home draw against struggling Ossett Town.

"I didn't think we were playing particularly well, although we were winning, if we were going for the championship we would have needed a win and I was annoyed with our performance," he said.

"We let it slip in the second half, we didn't reach the tempo we needed to and we didn't impose our ability on them."

On Saturday Boro entertain leaders Workington, who they drew 0-0 with up in Cumbria in November. If they are to repeat that or go one better and win, they will have to improve on the Ossett performance.

"Hyde drew on Monday night so Workington will come wanting to win, draws are no good to them," said Glendon.

"They are an aggressive side, they get the ball forward quickly, so it will be interesting.

"They don't play through the middle, they go right up top, so having Darren Royle at the back will be a big plus, although it won't suit our midfield - they don't like it when it is going back to front - picking up bits and pieces. They would rather have it going through midfield even if we are defending."

Missing will be inspirational midfielder Richard Battersby, who begins a four-game ban.

"He really has done very well for us this season and has probably been our most effective player on the ball. In fact if he took his game up another notch he could be playing in the Conference."

Fleury is likely to take his place.

Other good news this week is that last season's skipper, Davey Luker, who has been unavailable due to work commitments, has informed Glendon he wants to return and he could figure towards the end of the season.

Also Stephen Hill has returned to fitness and along with Kelly, McGuire and Royle it now gives Glendon four defenders to choose from.
