A YOUNG man killed when his car ploughed into a tree was just minutes from home, his family revealed today.

Police said David Antony Szewczuk, 20, of Pendle Road, Great Harwood, was on his way home from a night shift working as a barman when the accident happened.

They said they were still investigating the cause of the accident involving his Ford Fiesta, which happened just before 3am on Tuesday in Hyndburn Road, Great Harwood.

David's older brother Michael 25, also of Great Harwood, paid tribute to a "funny and intelligent man."

He said the former pupil of St Huberts RC Primary, Great Harwood, and St Augustine's RC High School, Billington, had lots of friends and will be sadly missed.

He added: "He loved football and supporting Blackburn Rovers and was a huge fan of Italian football.

"He worked at Mitton Fold and the Dunkenhalgh Hotel, Clayton-le-Moors as a bartender and was an extremely funny and intelligent individual who was extremely kindhearted and popular with all who came to know him.

"He will be sorely missed."

David's boss, Calum Colquhoun, paid tribute to a dedicated member of staff and added: "He was a lively and hardworking member of the team and he will be sadly missed by all his many friends here."

No other vehicles were involved in the incident and police have appealed for witnesses in a bid to piece together what happened.

Bosses at County Hall revealed that the crash may spark a review of safety measures along Hyndburn Road.

David also leaves mum and dad Denise and Tony and 11-year-old sister Sarah.

The funeral is being arranged.
