CARNIVAL organisers are appealing for support to help save their village fete.

Golborne's 57th annual celebration on May 14 could be the last if volunteers and villagers fail to respond.

Floats, walking characters and general helpers are all needed to keep the event alive.

Sheila Ashurst said: "The carnival is part of the history of the town and it would be a shame to lose it, but we will if no-one is willing to offer a helping hand.

"I know there are not many carnivals left but it would be nice to keep Golborne's going.

"Sadly some young people today don't seem interested and some go out of their way to spoil the fun for everyone.

"Last year stupid kids threw eggs and water balloons at the queen and we don't want that kind of behaviour repeated."

This year's parade starts from Derby Road at 1.30pm and moves to St Thomas' School where the queen, 10 -years-old Rebecca Roe will be crowned by church warden, Mrs Enid Porter.

Rebecca is a pupil at the school and attends St Thomas' Sunday Club. She is also a member of St Thomas' Amateur Dramatic Society, Golborne Brownies and the craft club. Her interests are swimming and music.

On the carnival ground there will be Morris dancing, a fun fair, tombola and a rugby tournament among other events.
