TRIBUTES have been paid to ex Leigh rugby league star Jack Wood who died last week aged 81.

Jack Wood signed for Leigh in 1947 and the flying winger soon left his mark, scoring a club record of six tries in one game against York.

During his six year career with the Hilton Park side, he scored 78 tries in just 102 games.

The club record he set 58 years ago was equalled by Leigh Centurions star Neil Turley last season, when he ran in half a dozen tries against the now defunct Chorley.

A spokesman for Leigh Centurions, said: "Jack Wood was one of the club's early post-war heroes and his scoring exploits live on today. He will never be forgotten here."

Mr Wood's funeral took place Thursday (17) at Higher Ince Parish Church at 1pm.
