A serious contender for the Irwell Stree Metals Crown emerged last week, as Elton Fold executed a smash and grab raid on two of their nearest rivals.

First, on match night, they tackled the in-form Elton Lib C, who were looking to stretch their winning run to ten.

With Russs boys in front on the aggregate and frames at 2-2, the "main event" between Phil Brearley and Simon Fitzsimmons developed into a no-contest as Simon ate his way through the reds, winning 91-44.

Butch Goodwin held his nerve in the last, despite a great performance from Mick Hamer, to win his frame on the black.

The long awaited rematch between Heywood and the Fold took place the following night. Elton winning 6-2, with great performances from Si Fitzsimmons and Danny Bleakley who both recorded 52 breaks.

The youngsters from Bury Snooker lead the way after their hard fought 6-3 victory at Tottington A.

The ever-consistent John Mawdsley followed by a great win from Chris Howard sent Tottington into a 2-0 lead.

Up stepped Danny Brejwo with a convincing 74-28 win against his lower handicapped opponent, followed by Si Fitzsimmons stunt double, Chris Holmes, who convincingly outpotted his opponent, and finally Josh Cornwell with a narrow victory which takes his record to 13-3 this season.

Radcliffe Central A moved into the second promotion spot after their 6-2 win at home to Buchanans.

The aggregate was decided after the first two games, Alan Green and Zia Aslam inflicting the damage, to put the Radcliffe lads two in front and 83 chalks up.

A great win from Dean Alston put Buchanans back in with a sniff. Frames four and five were shared leaving the last game in the balance.

Its not very often you find a team which has youth, flair and experience, Rad Central do.

Steve Coldridge provided the flair, easing through 44-28.

Duck B did their title chances no harm after suffering a scare at home to Stanley A.

Old Campaigners Kev Martin and Jimmy Gill, put the Duck two up, followed by Pete Croft, ending a run of four defeats, and Paul Gill to make it four.

Stanley went for broke, which nearly paid off, Craig Seymour and Johnny Holt overcome look-a-likes John Woods and Shaun Hodgkinson to fall short by 20 chalks.

Stanley B were the biggest casualties on the night, entertaining St Marys B, they were battered and dropped three places to fifth.

Jim Garvey turned back the years, to give Mr Competition Secretary a hammering that must still be smarting now.

Spanners Appleton pulled one back for the Parkhills brigade only for Mark Frankland and Ste Parry (eight on the bounce) to carry the torch home for St Marys and leapfrog Stanley in the table.

Finally, Walmersley C travelled to the outback, needing a big win to keep them on the coat-tails of the leaders.

The game was much, much closer than the final scoreline suggests. Dean Higgins, with Hollins only point on the night, continued his excellent season with a resounding win 80-25 win.

Unfortunately, his teammates could not assist, with good wins from Kieran Cunningham and Mike Brejwo, a black-baller from Brian Booth and a nailbiting end to the evening, Chris Greenhalgh and Dave Morley both winning by three points each and holding on to the aggregate by 21 points.

An 8-1 victory, upto sixth, a game in hand - who knows?
