THERE were celebrations when Bury Council's SureStart nursery celebrated its first year.

Tuesday's event allowed staff and children to share the occasion and the birthday cake!

Children from three months to four years attend the nursery in Kershaw Street, Bury. The nursery provides full day care for a limited number of children, but more will be accepted when the SureStart's Children's Centre building opens this summer.

The building currently being constructed is on the Springs estate in Bury. In addition to its purpose-built nursery, the children's centre will provide health and family support services.

Rachel Buckler, Bury Council's play, learning and childcare facilitator, said: "The neighbourhood nursery's role provides childcare for local families, enabling them to work or train, should they choose to."

SureStart Redvales is working in partnership with fire fighters to spread the message among the community about fire safety. Greater Manchester community fire safety officer Andy Sullivan will be going into all the community playgroups run by SureStart and talking to parents and children over the next few months.

The project will focus upon fire safety in the home and will identify the five main causes of fire in the home, promote the need for every home to have a working smoke alarm, develop and plan an escape route in the event of a fire and check the general home safety before going to bed.

This project has been developed in line with the SureStart target to have information about safety available to all families with young children in the SureStart area. Anyone who lives in the Redvales electoral ward who is interested in attending a session should contact Fozia Hussain, SureStart Development Worker on 0161 253 6384
