MARIE CALDWELL (Letters, March 11) has put her little trainered foot right in it! I was surprised to read her criticism of Audrey Schofield and her attempt to defend the indefensible. Actually, she entirely missed the point.

First, the residents of Mosley and Milner avenues have been extremely patient with the goings-on at the Jubilee Centre in Bury. We began to complain only after plans to virtually double the size of the building were passed by council, after having been refused by the planning department.

When the Jubilee Centre was built, we were promised by Beryl Pilkington that the building would be small and would not cause problems. In fact, it now causes major disruption. Surely Mrs Caldwell can understand that doubling its size is going to make matters worse, not better.

Mosley and Milner avenues are totally unsuitable for the large amounts of traffic caused by the Jubilee Centre.

Does Mrs Caldwell honestly think that having vehicular access to the extension will alleviate congestion? Has she considered the disastrous implications of combining large vans with pedestrians using Clarence Lido, or the danger to children attending Chesham Primary School?

Mrs Caldwell also appears to be under the delusion that deliveries to the Jubilee Centre are made only three times a week. In excess of three times a day would be more accurate.

Finally, as for her invitation to Mrs Schofield to "come and join us", I think Audrey prefers to socialise with people who understand the meaning of truth, honesty and common sense.

CAROLYN CLINTON,

Mosley Avenue, Bury.
