A SMOKE alarm saved the life of a 23-year-old man in Bury who fell asleep while smoking in bed.

Richard Dickinson managed to flee his home in Arbour Close, Walmersley, after being woken by a fire alarm on Saturday night.

He collapsed in the garden outside the semi-detached property and was revived by firefighters.

Mr Dickinson is believed to have fallen asleep while smoking in an upstairs bedroom at around 11.15pm and was able to fight his way out of the smoke filled house. No one else was home at the time.

He was treated by ambulance crews at the scene but declined to go to hospital.

Station officer Paul Myerscough said: "He is a very lucky man, there is no doubt the smoke alarm saved his life.

"It is an important reminder to others of the importance of having a working fire alarm in their homes."
