PLANS to transform one of the "most deprived" areas of the borough are another step closer to reality.

Town hall chiefs are next week seeking permission to demolish 134 homes in the Pimhole area of East Bury and replace them with new houses.

The project, valued two years ago at £11 million, aims to play a large part in wider regeneration of the area which has been given official renewal status.

Surveys showed that many of the century-old terraced homes were "unfit". The area covers Ingham Street, Oxford Street and Wilson Street, along with a block fronting Kershaw Street and Ormrod Street. Locals complained about poor housing, living conditions, surroundings and crime.

Some residents, though, are not happy. A 71-name petition objecting to the proposals has been submitted to planners, while other people say that the compensation being offered is not enough to buy another home nearby. Others are worried that the character of the area will be harmed.

However, officers have recommended that councillors give permission when the planning committee meets next Tuesday.

The application is for outline development: details of exactly how many and what type of houses are to be built will be revealed at future meetings. Conditions are likely to be attached that will impose an element of "affordable housing" and recreational provision.
