THERE was a top turnout at the Tottington and District Horticultural Society spring show as members celebrated their 70th anniversary.

More than 50 exhibitors braved the wintry weather to celebrate spring at Greenmount Old School with entries ranging from daffodils and children classes to wine and handicrafts.

To mark the anniversary, a number of special prizes was given out, including the Bury Times Trophy for best exhibit in junior class up to 16 years, awarded to seven-year-old Thomas Roscow, of Stretton Avenue in Greenmount.

The Mayor and Mayoress of Bury, Councillors Barry and Sharon Briggs, also enjoyed the show and watched the village children perform an Easter bonnet parade.

Mrs Kathleen Patrick, a volunteer for the society, said: "Although we were in competition with the awful weather, the Royal wedding and the Grand National, the show was indeed successful.

"Despite the number of daffodils being reduced, the quality was good and there was a high number of exhibits in the handicraft section of exceptionally high quality.

"The children excelled themselves with some outstanding entries and eggs were in abundance."

The next show is set to take place on September 10 at Greenmount Old School.
