CONGRATULATIONS on your brilliant spoof article in the April 1 issue of the Bury Times.

So clever of reporter Peter Doherty to disguise it as a topical subject - the 20 per cent rise in car parking charges!

The clues were there of course: "Council bosses say the increases are necessary to cover running costs . . ." (not to mention the loss of revenue from the former car park currently hosting the shell of another retail development, no doubt. Wonder what happened to the money they got for the land?) ". . .and also to persuade people to use alternative transport". Just how much does that cost then?

Not sure whether to label that as a dead giveaway or a dead horse. However, clear confirmation of the hoax came when the council leader was quoted as saying: "Percentages are irrelevant. It is about pounds, shillings and pence". Not since 1971 it hasn't - our monetary system went decimal 34 years ago!

Well, only a fool would believe all that other guff about not ripping people off and "good value for what they pay".
