PENDLE is set for a jobs boost after a window manufacturer announced plans to breathe new life into an empty factory doubling its presence in the borough.

Nelson-based Sovereign Group is to expand its Vale Street site by moving in to the former premises of Engineering and Glassfibre Developments Ltd (EGD).

The engineering firm went in to receivership in February with the loss of more than 100 jobs.

Today Glenn Taylor, managing director of Sovereign, said the announcement was a great boost for the town after the closure of EGD.

He said: "The loss of EGD was a serious blow for the town, but we hope that by putting the factory to use we can create many new jobs for the area in the future."

It is not yet known how many jobs will be created but Sovereign will expand manufacturing of its PVC-U products on the new site to meet increasing demand.

It will also relocate production of aluminium goods from its Lomeshaye base, to the new factory, which is next door to its existing building.

The company, whose main supplier is Burnley-based window and door company Veka, employs 180 people, nearly all at its Nelson headquarters.

"It produces about 1,500 window frames for customers each week. Clients include local authorities and housing associations."

Sovereign was subject to a management buy-out by Mr Taylor and finance director John Mackie in 2000.

The move will double the size of its factory from 75,000 sq ft to 150,000 sq ft as well as improving access and parking.

Mr Taylor added: "We are absolutely delighted to be a part of such good news."
