A FATHER whose son was sent home over a V-shaped haircut has slammed the school for ‘overreacting’.

Sean McCarthy, 35, of Fishmoor Drive, Blackburn, claims the same haircut has been approved by teachers at Our Lady and St John Catholic College in the past.

He also claimed other students have been allowed to have mohawks, shaved ‘train tracks’ and use brightly-coloured hair dye.

However the school maintains the style, which they describe as a ‘Vulcan haircut’, was strictly against well-published rules and said it was unable to comment on the hairstyles of other pupils.

The school has also offered to correct 13-year-old Sean McCarthy’s haircut for free by offering the services of the professional hairdresser based in their post-16 vocational centre.

The youngster has been told he cannot return to class until the style has been changed.

However father-of-five Mr McCarthy said his son’s haircut was fine.

He said: “If it was a school rule that was applied to everyone then I would back it 100 per cent, but it seems like they have picked on Sean’s haircut for no good reason at all.

“The same haircut was okay last time he had it done.

“He’s a good lad who gets on with his work and doesn’t misbehave.”

Colette Gillen, headteacher at Our Lady & St John’s Catholic College, said: “All parents and carers of our pupils sign up to our uniform policy, which includes haircuts, when they accept the place at our school.

“The policy is clearly set out in the prospectus and we do reiterate to parents at every opportunity, by newsletter, letters and by text messages, what our uniform policy is.

“All pupils are required to conform to school policy and standards.”
