TRADERS in Darwen are looking forward to the new shops in the town hall.

Part of the front of the building, which opened in 1882, has been adapted to create five units in keeping with the Victorian façade.

The premises are due to be completed in April and tenants are now being sought.

Eileen Guy, chair of Darwen Shop and Business Association, said: “The new units are a great idea. It will be good to get some quality shops in the town and give more choice to new and existing customers.”

Steph Rostron, who sells pet food on the three day market, said: “Shopping is always about choice and these new units will not only be a great asset to the market but also to the town centre itself.”

Councillor Alan Cottam, executive member for regeneration and environment, said: “These units are brand new and high quality.

"They are based in a prime location and adjacent to the market hall, which is the heart of the town centre.”

The town hall refurbishment scheme also includes new and improved public toilets, disabled toilets, babychanging and feeding rooms.
