A BLACKBURN technology giant has secured a multi-million pound deal to supply its products to thousands of schools in Spain.

The deal comes as Promethean begins to put the wheels in motion for a £450million stock exchange floatation.

The company, which is based in Lower Philips Road and employs 300 people at the site, is also looking to expand and find new premises.

Now it has received a further boost after striking a deal to install 4,550 of its ActivBoard+2 interactive whiteboards in 1,900 schools in the Spanish region of Andalucia.

Completion of this roll-out will see some eight per cent of the estimated 78,000 classrooms in Andalucia equipped with interactive whiteboards. The project is being funded through a Spanish Government investment programme.

Paul Berry, Promethean’s president of European sales and marketing, said: “We are delighted with this significant contract win, which follows a comprehensive tender process and demonstrates Andalucia’s preference for Promethean’s interactive learning solutions.

“This contract is further evidence of the growing adoption of interactive learning technology in Europe, which is a key growth market for Promethean.”

Businessman Tony Cann founded Promethean in the late 1990s, initially offering electronic whiteboards to 500 schools. It now sells to more than 100 countries.

Promethean’s ActivBoard, an interactive whiteboard, has been hugely successful across the globe and, to date, some 500,000 have been bought by schools.

There are more than 12million students worldwide now being taught with the aid of Promethean technology.
