ST Leonard’s Primary School is jumping for joy after being named SPAR Star school of the year and also reaching the Lancashire Youth Games gymnastics finals.

The Padiham school was named star school for its contribution to Lancashire Youth Games qualifying events in the district.

And its young gymnasts were head over heels after booking their place in the county gym finals which will take place at Hyndburn Sports Centre on Wednesday, March 10.

The super Saints were up against eight other teams from schools across Burnley in the district finals held at St Peter’s Centre.

The event, organised by Helen Tomlinson, competition manager for the Burnley School Sport Partnership, also included teams from Rosewood, Wellfield, Lowerhouse, St John's Burnley, Padiham Primary, St James and Heasandford.

Jane Sheridan, senior competition manager at Lancashire School Sport Partnerships, said: “This is and exciting time for youth sports, with the 2010 London Olympics and Paralympics on the horizon and there is a lot for our children and young people to aspire to."

And following their gym success, St Leonard’s sport’s coordinator Neil Claxton was handed the Star School shield and £700 worth of new sports kit from Surridge Sport at a special presentation at the school.

Linda Johnson of sponsors SPAR said: “We would like to congratulate St Leonard’s for its active participation in the Spar Lancashire Youth Games and for encouraging healthy lifestyles in Burnley.”
