SUNBEDS are to be removed from two council-run leisure centres in Hyndburn over cancer fears.

Leisure in Hyndburn has two sunbeds at Hyndburn Sports Hall in Church and Norden Sports Hall in Rishton but after a review they are to be axed.

In Blackburn with Darwen and the Ribble Valley, sunbeds have already been removed from publically-run leisure centres.

The latest move follow a study by the International Agency for Research on Cancer which revealed that prolonged exposure to UV tanning equipment can cause health effects ranging from conjunctivitis and cataracts to premature ageing and skin cancer.

It has prompted new guidance from the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) that recommends that all under 18s do not use sunbeds and that all coin-operated salons are supervised by trained staff.

Michael Hunt, director of business and performance in Hyndburn, said: “Our organisation has a commitment to improving the health and wellbeing of the local people of Hyndburn.”

The sunbeds will go at the end of March.
