ACCRINGTON Stanley are drawing up plans to play Blackburn Rovers in a bid to raise more survival cash.

Their SOS campaign to raise £308,000 by Saturday, October 24 has now hit a total of £80,000, largely due to a high-profile match against Burnley, which saw £50,000 raised for the club’s pending tax bill.

The match with Rovers has been agreed ‘in principle’ between the two clubs and they are currently looking at setting a date in November.

Though this is later than the deadline to pay the tax bill, bosses at Stanley said they could use their general running costs to pay the bill ahead of the match itself.

Blackburn Rovers chairman John Williams said: “We have been in talks with Stanley and are trying to help where we can.

“Hopefully, we will play them in November during the international break. The two managers are now looking at the best date.”

Accrington Stanley chief executive Rob Heys said: “It is brilliant that they are looking into doing something to help out like this.

"Obviously they are under no obligation and it really does give you a lot of hope that we will make the target on time.

“We’re just really grateful. It is later than the deadline, but if we know it is definitely going ahead, we can use funds from elsewhere in the meantime.”

The club said numerous smaller fundraisers are on-going and there are also plans for a fundraising evening at Rewind bar, in Burnley, on Sunday.

Fundraisers continue to be organised by supporters, including a sponsored walk this afternoon when Burnley policemen and Stanley fans Sgt Phil Carter and PCSO Frank Francesco will embark on a 30-mile sponsored walk ahead of Accrington’s match with Crewe Alexandra, from Gargrave, near Skipton, to the Crown Ground.

On Saturday, Stanley have bucket collections planned at both Ewood Park and Anfield for the home games of Blackburn Rovers and Liverpool.

On Sunday, former 2BR Sports presenter Dominic Walker, who now works as the announcer at the Crown Ground, will be DJing, along with Rewind resident DJ Alex O'Neill.

The event starts at 9pm. Admission is £2, with all proceeds to the Save Our Stanley fund.

Stanley staff and management will attend.
