VETERAN police officers will be pounding a different beat when they embark on a 30-mile sponsored walk to help save Accrington Stanley.

Reds supporters Sgt Phil Carter, based in Burnley, and his colleague PCSO Frank Francesco are appealing for football fans of whatever colour to back their trek from Gargrave, near Skipton, to the The Crown pub in Accrington.

The police pairing has been spurred into action as the League Two side face a race against time to settle a £308,000 tax bill in just eight weeks.

Sgt Carter and PCSO Francesco, a keen rambler, are bidding to slog it along the Leeds Liverpool Canal before heading for the Stanley heartland, on September 29.

Sgt Carter said: “We just wanted to do something different and we hope people from all clubs will sup-port us along the way.

“There will be buckets in the town centre, with colleagues, for people to make donations, and we will be carrying our own collecting tins.”

Donations for the cause can be pledged via e-mail to philip.carter@lancashire.pnn.co.uk or via the club website.

The duo are also planning to stage anothe fundraiser, either a race night or casino night, at Koko’s nightclub in Elizabeth Street, Burnley, on October 9.
