TWO supermarket checkout workers' bid for X Factor stardom was dashed when Simon Cowell told them they sounded like "two drunks being thrown out of a wedding".

Andy O'Donnell, 42, of Loveclough, joined forces with his Rawtenstall Asda colleague John Sedgwick, 20 of Helmshore, to form the duet "Checkout."

But the Rossendale singers failed to wow the judging panel with their version of Bee Gees classic words and S-Club 7's Reach.

The pair said they impressed at the 2,000-strong live audience, but not Cowell.

Andy said: "We passed the first four rounds to get to the live audition in Manchester which was a brilliant achievement for both of us.

"We often sing when we're in work so it seemed a good idea to see if we could impress on the X Factor.

"It was brilliant.

"The crowd absolutely loved us and some were on their feet, but unfortunately, the four judges did not agree with the British public."

Simon Cowell described Checkout as sounding like "two drunks being thrown out of a wedding."

Footage of the pair singing their hearts out is expected to feature on the Xtra Factor show tonight.

Holly Willoughby, who presents the Xtra Factor, selected the two singers for a mock supermarket checkout scenario.

Checkout have also been asked to perform at the ClubClick singles party night at Accrington Golf Club, Oswaldtwistle, on Saturday, October 3.

Andy added: "It would be great if they kept our footage in the final edit, because I gave Cheryl Cole a kiss and a birthday card which went down really well.

"I think me and John will try again next year and we will be more comfortable with the set up as well."

* The X Factor is on ITV1 tonight from 7pm, followed by the Xtra Factor on ITV2 at 8.15pm.
