A North West Euro MP has still not paid back any of the £500,000 he claimed in “unjustified” expenses.

Den Dover, who is one of seven MEPs representing the region in the European Parliament, was expelled from the Conservatives by leader David Cameron last November after a probe into cash paid into a family-run business over a seven-year period.

At the time it was revealed that Mr Dover paid £758,146 to MP Holdings — run by his wife Kathleen and daughter Amanda — for secretarial and parliamentary assistant work.

He was ordered by Harald Romer, the European Parliament’s secretary-general, to pay back just over £500,000 after an inquiry found him guilty of expense abuses.

But it has been revealed that Mr Dover, who lives in Euxton, Chorley, has not yet repaid any of the cash, much to the anger of fellow North West MEPs.

And when he steps down as a North West MEP on May 7, Mr Dover will have collected up to £79,000 in pay since the probe.

He will also be entitled to a full pension, worth up to £35,000 a year.

Rival Lib Dem Euro MP Chris Davies, who blew the whistle on expense abuses by leaking details of a secret parliamentary auditor’s report, said: “If a member of the public were to falsely claim social security payments, they could face a prison sentence.

"By contrast, a vast sum is involved in this case yet the reaction seems to be one of great complacency.”

Mr Davies has written the head of the European Parliament’s administration, demanding to know what is being done to recover the money.

Mr Dover was unavailable for comment.
