A COUNCILLOR is being investigated for not declaring an interest when he proposed road repairs on three streets, including his own.

In an area council meeting Peel ward councillor Graham Jones suggested three unadopted roads, Annie Street, Hodder Street and Manor Street in Accrington should be resurfaced due to the potholes.

Coun Tony Dobson and Coun Paul Barton have complained to Hyndburn Council’s Standards Committee that the leader of the opposition did not declare an initial interest that he lived in Hodder Street when he proposed the resurfacing works.

They claim he put in a retrospective declaration after a decision had been made.

But Labour councillor Jones said when he raised the issue those who attended the area council meeting last year were aware he lived in Hodder Street.

He said once the road repairs were taken up by Peel and Barnfield Area Council he declared an interest and stepped away from the situation.

Later £2,000-worth of repairs on the roads were agreed.

Coun Jones added: “This is just ridiculous. It is pathetic. I had said three unadopted roads had potholes on them, in a local meeting I said they needed repair.

"People know I live in Hodder Street but it wasn’t just Hodder Street that needed repair.

“I wrote letters to residents and clearly stated I had to declare an interest in this.”
