A CHINESE takeaway has finally re-opened almost six months to the day after it was wrecked when a car smashed into it.

Du Mai, the owner of Mai Takeaway, Shear Brow, Blackburn, pledged he would reopen as soon as possible after the accident in March, which also ruined the flat above where he, his wife and two sons live.

Yesterday he welcomed customers back for the first time after work was finished on Friday.

Mr Mai, his wife Chyet and sons Kenny, 11, and Kevin, seven, have been staying with friends in Blackburn for the last six months.

Mr Mai, known as Mikey to his regulars, said: “It’s a relief to be open again because it’s been a difficult time, but it’s great to welcome people back, and to be back in our home. Students from St Mary’s College has already returned and we’re very thankful for their loyalty.”

The takeaway has been voted the best chip shop in Blackburn twice in recent years.

Mr Mai has run the shop for four years, before which he ran a takeaway in Cherry Tree for three years.
