Police are appealing for information about a "deplorable" break-in, in Helmshore, where a pensioner was assaulted in his own home.

Officers were called to Moss Close after reports of a break-in, in the early hours of Wednesday, April 29.

Intruders forced entry through the front door of an elderly couple's property and injured an 85-year-old man when he confronted them.

The offenders then smashed through the conservatory to escape.

The victim was taken to hospital with a head injury and cuts to his face and is still receiving treatment.

His 86-year-old wife was left shocked but physically unharmed.

The property was damaged but it is not yet known if anything was taken.

Officers are now investigating the incident and appealing for information.

Police are asking anyone in the area to please check CCTV /doorbell cameras between 2.15am to 3.15am for any suspicious activity, people, or vehicles.

Det Sgt Stu Peall, of the police's burglary team, said: “This is a deplorable offence, committed against an elderly couple in their own home. It’s an utterly heartless, cowardly and despicable offence and we will leave no stone unturned in our efforts to find those responsible.

“This couple can’t have been a serious threat to anyone, the level of violence used is obscene and I appeal to anyone with knowledge of the offence or the identity of the offenders to come forward.

"Even those in or on the periphery of crime cannot surely condone this behaviour and I would appeal to them to do what is right and to come forward if they have any information."

Anyone with information should call police on 101 quoting log 0126 of April 29.
