More than 70 schools in Blackburn with Darwen are to benefit following the government’s announcement of funding totalling £1.8bn.

The cash will improve school and sixth-form college buildings across the country, throughout 2024/25.

The borough will receive more than £700,000 to make improvements to school buildings, the highest amount being at St Wilfrid’s CE Academy in Duckworth Street, Blackburn, which is set to receive just over £30,000.

A further seven schools are set to receive between £20, 000 and £29,000 in funding. They are Pleckgate High School, Witton Park Academy, St Bede’s RC High School, Darwen Aldridge Community Academy, Darwen Vale High School, Tauheedal Islam Girls’ High School and Queen Elizabeth’s Grammar School.

The total amount of funding for the borough is £729,481 for the 77 borough schools.

Across the region, the cash is expected to be spent on new roofs, heating systems, and updating classrooms, ensuring children are learning in high-quality environments.

Schools minister Damian Hinds said: “From day-to-day maintenance to long-lasting structural improvements, this funding will support schools in the North West in providing high-quality learning environments for all our children.

“We want every child to realise their potential and great school buildings are just one part of our work to drive up standards across the education system – with more pupils in good and outstanding schools than ever before.”

With these new capital funding allocations, the government says it has now allocated more than £17bn since 2015 to improve school buildings. This is in addition to the delivery of the School Rebuilding Programme, in a bid to transform more than 500 schools across England.

Allocations are informed by the government’s condition data collection to target funding to where it is most needed.
