It appears we have nothing else to argue about now, apart from how our national symbols are being desecrated.
Recently, we had both the Prime Minister and the leader of the opposition wading in on the new England shirt scandal. Over the next couple of months expect more of this nonsense in the hope it will make them appear to be ‘normal’ and ‘men of the people’.
The row centres on Nike altering the cross using purple and blue horizontal stripes in what it called a ‘playful update’ to the shirt ahead of Euro 2024. The firm said the colours were inspired by the training kit worn by England’s 1966 World Cup winners.
I don’t think they should be messing with the flag and it should have been left the way it was. However, we will get a whole load of folk raging over how this is all part of some major conspiracy where our ‘Englishness is being constantly attacked’.
Football legend John Barnes probably put it best by saying: ‘If they were going to change the three lions then that’s a debate to be had. I don’t see what the fuss is. I think it’s a much ado about nothing.’
The real scandal, as many have pointed out, is not the flag at all but the fact we have to fork out £85 quid for it. The junior one is £65 and an ‘authentic’ version costs £124.99 for adults.
I support England and I fell in love with them when Bryan Robson scored within 27 seconds in ’82. But I don’t love them that much.
The price of football tops is extortionate. If you have two kids who both want shirts you should not have to fork out upwards of £120.
Maybe a trip to Turkey is in order ahead of the Euros.
If only we made such a fuss over other things. You know like MPs voting themselves a nice hefty pay rise.
I do think that MPs should be paid and they should have a salary that means they can dedicate their time and effort to constituents but there is a time and a place for everything.
Especially with the amount of grief they get.
It would have been so much more befitting if the pay rise was turned down or just donated to a local charity. I am not sure but some may have done this.
But to have a pay rise while local councils hike bills and other costs continue to rise is a bigger scandal to be making the front pages, than a badly drawn flag?
England take on Belgium tonight in a friendly. Kick-off is at 7.45pm and the match will be screened on Channel 4
