If someone of a certain age says they were born in Accrington, the chances are that this is the home where they came into the world.
Taken in 1979, this photo shows the former Rough Lee Maternity Home which had closed that year.
Originally the home of one of Accrington’s more prominent families - it was belonged to Major William Nutter JP - it became the town’s maternity home in 1927.
When the home closed, it was intended that a new maternity unit at Accrington Victoria Hospital would serve mums to be in Hyndburn.
Over the years thousands of babies would have Rough Lee on their birth certificate. The home was situated off Royds Street close to Oak Hill Park.
Were you a mum who had their baby delivered at Rough Lee?
