Police blocked off a main route through East Lancashire during rush hour this evening.
Officers attended the A56 near Rising Bridge roundabout after receiving reports of a car travelling on the wrong side of the carriageway.
The AA traffic website showed slow-moving traffic between Haslingden and Rising Bridge.
Police were unable to find the vehicle.
A police spokesperson said: "We received a report of a car travelling on the wrong side of the carriageway.
"We have attended and found no trace of the vehicle."
