A man was found dead in his friend’s flat after consuming an excess of alcohol and drugs, an inquest has heard.

Dean Swan, 47, was found unresponsive on the sofa in the friend’s living room on June 1.

Mr Swan had been staying at the flat for around three weeks, having split up with his long-term partner.

Coroner Richard Taylor, reading the evidence at Blackburn Town Hall, said Mr Swan’s family never heard him express any thoughts of harming himself.

Further evidence read at the court said Mr Swan and his friend had stayed up the night before smoking cannabis.

The friend woke the next morning and went out, and on their return noticed some vomit on the floor and went to check on Mr Swan.

She called another friend who then called the emergency services, but he was pronounced dead.

A post-mortem examination did not find a natural cause of death but a toxicology report showed the blood methadone concentration was within the range found in fatalities.

There was also evidence of pregabalin, cocaine, diazepam, and mirtazapine, as well as alcohol at four times the legal driving limit.

Mr Taylor recorded a conclusion of drug and alcohol related death, saying: “Dean Swan died on June 1 at Essex Street, Barnoldswick, having ingested an excess of drugs and alcohol.”
