DETAILS of Remembrance events in East Lancashire's largest borough have been revealed.

Blackburn with Darwen Council has announced its plans to commemorate the fallen in two World Wars and other conflicts.

They include a special concert at the borough's King George's Hall.

Remembrance Day is always marked as November 11 on the calendar as the First World War ended at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in accordance with the Armistice signed by The Allies and Germany in 1918.

That date will fall on a Saturday this year, with Remembrance Sunday being the following day. Events will be held across Blackburn and Darwen over the weekend with a Remembrance Concert taking place at King George’s Hall on Thursday November 9.

The leader of Blackburn with Darwen Council, Cllr Phil Riley, said: "It’s important that we join together on Remembrance Day to pay our respects to those who have served in the armed forces.

"It’s a time to reflect and remember those who have put their lives at risk and those who have made the ultimate sacrifice and these Remembrance events being held in the Borough will give our communities the chance to come together and mark the occasion."

There will be a Remembrance Service on Saturday November 11 at Blackburn Town Hall at 11am where the two-minute silence will be marked by the firing of maroon rockets from the roof of the town hall building.

A similar event will take place at Darwen Market Square at 11am where the two-minute silence will be marked by the firing of maroon rockets from the roof of the Town Hall building in Darwen followed by a short service held outside the town hall followed by a wreath laying at the Boer War Memorial, Belgrave Square, Darwen.

On Remembrance Sunday November 12 Blackburn Cathedral will host a United Service of Remembrance at 9.30am following which a parade will form on King William Street Moving at 10.25am to the Corporation Park Gardens of Remembrance for a wreath laying service.

There will also be Service of Remembrance at St Peter’s Church Darwen at 9am followed by a service and wreath laying at the War Memorial Bold Venture Park at 10.45am.

On Thursday November 9 The Mayor’s Remembrance Concert at King George’s Hall will take place at 6.30 pm where school children from all over the borough, the Salvation Army Band and local cadets will join together for an evening of words and music.
