A number of homes are without water as United Utilities attempt to fix a burst pipe in Altham.

The fire service has helped the water company after some flooding in the area while repairs take place.

At around 11.30pm on Wednesday (May 8), United Utilities received reports from customers in Burnley stating they had no water, or poor pressure.

At around 1.23am, the team located a burst pipe in New Row, Altham.

The team has been working through the night to fix the burst and return water to homes.

In a statement the company said the repair is “a little more complex” than first thought.

United Utilities has apologised for any inconvenience this has caused.

A spokesperson said: “We’ve had reports that some customers in the BB5/BB12 area of Burnley  are experiencing no water, or poor pressure, we are sorry if you are affected by this at the moment.

“Just to let you know, we have found the cause of no water or low pressure to be a burst on New Row.

“The repair in your area is a little more complex than we first thought, and is taking longer than we’d hoped to safely complete the work required.

“Once again, we’re sorry for any inconvenience this may be causing and thank you for your patience.”

In the latest update, issued at 10.15am, a spokesperson said: “We're progressing with the repair to the burst water main in your area, but we still have work to do.

“Please be assured, our team are doing all they can and will have things back up and running soon. We’re really sorry for any inconvenience this is causing, and thanks again for your continued patience.”

A spokesperson for Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service said: “At 11.07pm on June 7, three fire engines from Great Harwood, Hyndburn and Padiham attended a flooding incident on Burnley Road, Altham.

“Crews assisted United Utilities, and used two major pumps, one hose reel pump ejector to remove the water. Firefighters were in attendance for one hour.”
