Over the coming week we will be ‘sold’ this idea the whole country will be celebrating King Charles’ Coronation and the Royal family is front and centre of what is ‘good’ about being British.

But that is not really true. You will find some people couldn’t care less what happens next week or are that happy that all this money is being spent holding the Coronation.

I mean, why do we need to have a Coronation in the first place? Just put the crown on the head and be done with it. What is the need for all this pomp and pageantry? Must we have wall-to-wall coverage of the whole event and people commenting on it like some World Cup final?

Do I really want to sit in front of the TV and watch someone else be paraded through the streets in a golden carriage whilst people struggle to pay their bills.

Anyway, with everyone generally a ‘lot poorer’ (according to the Bank of England’s chief economist, Huw Pill) could this money be better used elsewhere?

As someone who cares little which Royal family member will be wearing what, I still do think events like this are good for Britain.

While some like to use the excuse to be really patriotic and stick it down your throat, on the whole it is something the nation revels in. We like the build-up. We like the reports and we like how we get special offers at the supermarket because of it.

We like how we have something the Americans and the French don’t.

Most of all we like that for once we are the centre of the world’s attention for something other than Brexit and our constant hounding of foreigners in the mainstream press.

While many people do miss The Queen, I do sense King Charles appears to want to reach out to all parts of Britain even it means he gets criticised for it. Maybe he should have been handed the reins a decade earlier.

What I find a little odd and I include myself in this group of people, is that if given the opportunity to meet the King I would probably say ‘yes’. If someone from the Royal household was coming down my street I would not pelt them with tomatoes but climb a wall to get a better view. Especially my favourite Royal personalities - Harry and Meghan.

We like to criticise the monarchy but if given the opportunity we will post gushing social media posts if we just happen to bag ourselves a Royal honour.

You see, you can hate the Royals but then still love all the pomp and nonsense that goes with it.
