A mountain rescue team were called on Tuesday (January 17) after a woman fell on Pendle Hill steps that were “thick with ice”.

The owner of a nearby cafe, Cauldron Coffee Shop, called Pendle and Rossendale Mountain rescue team after being alerted of the walker’s fall.

The woman, who had suspected back and pelvic injuries, was given morphine as pain relief.

Further assessments revealed that she had a femoral trauma.

She was placed on a stretcher and carried down to a local farm where members of the rescue team could continue observations and wait for the ambulance.

The rescue team has warned the public to wear the right shoes and clothing for the icy weather, to avoid similar slips and falls.

A spokesperson said: “The team were called out to a fallen walker on Pendle with suspected back and pelvic injuries.

“Our team leader was called directly by the owner of the Cauldron Coffee Shop at the foot of the steps on Pendle Hill after being alerted to a walker that had a nasty fall on the steps which were thick with ice.

“Mob two and 10 members responded after the alarm was raised. Paramedics in the team immediately shielded the walker from the elements and proceeded with a primary survey, followed by pain relief via IV morphine.

“After assessment it was found to be a femoral trauma, so we proceeded to carefully package the casualty and stretcher carry her down to the local farm where we could continue observations and wait for the ambulance out of the freezing weather.

“As the temperature drops after mid-afternoon, please take extra care to wear the right gear and maybe invest in some micro spikes to avoid slipping when ice is about.

“We wish the lady a speedy recovery and hope it’s not put her of the beauty of Pendle Hill or Lancashire.”
