Two inspirational boys from East Lancashire, who have raised thousands for a children’s hospital, have been visiting primary schools across the region.

Hughie Higginson, from Burnley, and Freddie Xavi, from Whalley, visited Lord Street Primary School in Colne earlier this month.

The duo, who have raised more than £250,000 for Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital, visited the Lord Street school as part of anti-bullying week.

Hughie, who was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL) in 2020, spoke about his cancer diagnosis.

The pair, who won a Pride of Britain award, also talked about their fundraising efforts and the new book they have written about friendship, which is called ‘Friends Are Amazing’.

A spokesperson for the school said the boys “inspired” the children at the school.

They said: “Hughie and Freddie came to Lord Street at part of anti-bullying week, on friendship Friday (November 18).

“Hughie told the school about his diagnosis, Freddie then talked about his fundraising.

“They then showed the children the book they have written about friendship and about their future plans to raise for money for charity.

“They inspired all of our children and we talked about how everything they had done links to our school values of ambition, respect and collaboration.”

In 2020, Freddie ran two kilometres for 50 days in order to raise money for Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital, where Hughie was receiving treatment.

Freddie raised thousands for Royal Manchester Children's, even allowing them to get slushies on the floor where Hughie received his treatment which he said were a huge help to him.

Earlier this year the friends took on a 100km challenge where they aim to run 1km around 92 Premier League and English Football League clubs, raising even more money for Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital Charity as well as other oncology wards around the country.

Famous faces, such as Burnley’s Jordan North and Bolton comic Paddy McGuinness, have joined them on some of their runs.

Friends Are Amazing, illustrated by Erica Salcedo, can be purchased from any leading book store including Waterstones and Amazon.
