A NEW dad said to have been the victim of a serious stabbing has been jailed after arming himself with a knife the following day.

Burnley magistrates heard how Damien Taylor, 22, who had been ordered out of part of Bacup by police after shouting and swearing in the street, was later found to have a flick knife on him.

The defendant, who had thrown the weapon at a man with him when confronted by a police inspector, had almost 60 previous convictions.

Taylor, who had been the subject of a suspended sentence for pinching cash off an elderly and vulnerable neighbour, was said to be terrified he would be knifed.

He was the father of a premature baby, currently being cared for at Hope Hospital, Salford, and was desperate to be with the child.

The defendant, of Alma Street, Bacup, admitted possessing an offensive weapon in St James Street, Bacup, and returning to a place he had been ordered from by police. He was jailed for 80 days.

Wendy Chappell, prosecuting, said: "The defendant was stabbed in the arm on Thursday and there was no reason why he had the knife in his possession that day as the person was in custody."

Janet Sime, defending, said Taylor knew he should not have a knife with him, despite the fact he was terrified he was going to be stabbed.
