TWO tutors from Accrington and Rossendale College have been recognised with awards for excelling in education.

Citizenship project managers Tahir Hussain and Samina Hussain were awarded Overseas Pakistani Pride of Community Awards at a ceremony attended by the Mayor of Manchester and representatives from the Pakistani Embassy.

The duo run a citizenship course at the college for foreign people living in the area.

Mr Hussain said: "The targets for the citizenship project were set at 480 third country nationals in the first year and so far we have 300 people who have either completed the course, are currently undertaking it or enrolled due to start.

"Students receive a mixture of taught and experiential learning and we think that this is highly important.

"The course follows Home Office criteria on citizenship but we are emphasising the importance of integration.

"We are hoping to become recognised as a regional centre for citizenship by growing the scope of the project."

The courses last for 37 hours, over 15 weeks, or there is a 30-hour course for those whose English is above entry level one.
