A special dog walk is being held this weekend to raise money for a local animal rescue centre and fostering service which cares for and re-homes mistreated pets.

A 12-year-old dog who was neglected by his owners was finally fostered after three months at an East Lancashire RSPCA accommodation.

RSPCA Lancashire East Branch’s recently launched fostering scheme is providing temporary accommodation for dogs and cats within an hour’s drive of the centre.

Launched in April this year, its first success story was that of Harvey, a 12-year-old Jack Russell, who, neglected by former owners, was suffering from a bad case of alopecia.

Harvey became the first dog to be fostered under the scheme, spending two months under the watchful eye of his “foster mum” Glenys Oates before he was placed in his forever home.

To continue supporting the wonderful foster work scheme, staff and volunteers at RSPCA Lancashire East Branch are inviting dog owners to join them for a fundraising walk.

Mutt Strut is being held at Towneley Park in Burnley this Saturday, September 3, with all proceeds from the event going towards the funding of the branch’s animal centre in Altham, including the running of the fostering scheme.

Owners can register their pets on the day between 11.45am and 1.45pm and then head off at their own pace to walk across the Parkrun circuit.

Rather than requesting sponsors, the branch is asking that all dog owners taking part make a donation of £10. On completing the route, they will all receive a certificate and a goody bag to mark the occasion.

RSPCA Lancashire East Branch manager Jeanette Ainscough said: “It’s our first fundraising walk since the days when we used to take part in 'Big Walkies' and we’re hoping for a great turnout.

“Towneley Park is a popular spot for dog walking and we think the £10 registration donation is an easier option for owners than them having to find sponsors, so we are hoping to get a lot of people signing up on the day.

“Like a number of local branches we are finding it a challenge to meet the increasing costs of our vital work helping to rehome animals who have suffered from neglect.

"So we would love it if owners and their dogs could join us for what should be a great fundraising day.”

Owners can choose to walk their dogs over a 1.5 mile-long marshalled route, or complete the circuit twice so as to make up a three-mile jaunt. They can also pre-register their dogs beforehand by visiting the branch’s website.

To add to the walkies fun, the branch’s tombola team will be in attendance with some great prizes to be won.
