ON the 17th of May 2020, a teenage girl was shot dead in broad daylight on a Blackburn street.

That girl was 19-year-old law student Aya Hachem.

Eight people now stand trial accused of her murder and the attempted murder of another man, Pachah Khan.

The Lancashire Telegraph has secured the a seat in the press box inside of court 1 at Preston Crown Court and will continue to bring you live updates from the heart of the trial.

The prosecution have now concluded opening their case and the jury have been shown hours of CCTV footage and audio recordings.

Witnesses are now being called into court to provide evidence.

17th May 2020 – Day 1

On the second day in court, all eight defendants entered not-guilty pleas and the jury was selected. Click here for the full story.

20th May 2020 – Day 4 (First day of prosecution opening)

On the fourth official day of the trial, the prosecutor Nicholas Johnson QC opened the case. The jury were given a brief overview of events before details emerged about what happened in the days running up to the killing.

21st May 2021 – Day 5 (Second day of prosecution opening)

On the second day of the prosecution opening, the jury were told all about how Feroz Suleman had a ‘ringside seat’ for the intended assassination of Pachah Khan. Click here for the round-up.

24th May 2021 – Day 6 (Third and final day of prosecution opening)

On the final day of the prosecutions opening, we heard how and when all of the defendants were arrested. For the live blog from that day, click here.

Also heard on this day were details about a feud between Feroz Suleman, the man the prosecution say is responsible for organising the hit, and Pachah Khan, the ‘intended target’ of the bullet which struck Aya. Click here to read more about that.

25th/26th/ 27th May – Days 7/8/9

The prosecution continued with the sequence of events, going through all of the CCTV footage, messages, phone calls and events which had been addressed in the opening.

A recording of the 999 call made by Pachah Khan just seconds after Aya was killed was also played to the court. Read about that here.

During these days there were several interruptions to proceedings in court, including an issue with the ventilation system at Preston forcing the closure of the building in the afternoon on the 26th.

28th May 2021 – Day 10 (Pacha Khan gives evidence)

On the final day of the second week, the man who the prosecution say was the intended target of the hit, gave evidence. For the live updates from that day, click here. 

Mr Khan told the court he had a ‘bad relationship’ with Feroz Suleman and had received threats on his life in the months running up to May 17. Click here to read that.

1st/2nd/3rd June 2021 – Days 11/12/13

No updates as court deals with legal arguments and other issues.

4th June 2021 – Day 14

Proceedings got going again for the first time in almost a week, with the prosecution continuing with the sequence of events, showing the jury more CCTV footage and audio clips.

No articles were published on this day.

7th June 2021 – Day 15

On the first day of the trial’s fourth week, the jury heard from pathologist Naomi Carter. Ms Carter found that Aya died as a result of a gunshot wound which caused severe bleeding and internal injury.

The jury were also shown more CCTV footage of when Zamir Raja (who the prosecution say was the hitman) and Anthony Ennis (‘getaway driver’) fled to Europe after the shooting.

8th/9th June 2021 – Days 16 and 17

On these days, police officers were called to give evidence about the interviews all defendants gave while in custody.

10th/11th June 2021 – Days 18 and 19

On June 10, counsel discussed legal arguments. The court did not sit on June 11.

14 and 15th of June 2021 – Days 20 and 21

Zamir Raja

On Monday, June 14, the first defendant in the case was called to the stand to give evidence.

Zamir Raja answered questions from his own barrister and some other counsel before voluntarily excusing himself from proceedings.

Later that week, on Friday June 19, Zamir Raja pleaded guilty to the manslaughter of Aya Hachem.

16th,17th,18th and 21st June 2021 – Days 22, 23, 24 and 25

Abubakr Satia

Over these four days, Abubakr Satia – the man accused of sourcing the car that was used in the hit, gave evidence.

22nd, 23rd, 24th June 2021 – Days 26, 27 and 28.

Uthman Satia

From Tuesday the 22nd of June until Uthman Satia gave evidence for three days.

25th, 26th, 27th and 28th June 2021 – Days 30, 31, 32 and 33.

Kashif Manzoor

On the last day of the trial’s sixth week, Kashif Manzoor gave evidence.

Manzoor spoke about his role in the killing of Aya Hachem and his connection to all of the defendant’s.

Ayaz Hussain

On Thursday July 1 and 2nd Ayaz Hussain started to give his evidence.

Feroz Suleman

On Thursday July 8th, Feroz Suleman took to the witness box for the first time.

He was question by his barrister Michael Hayton QC, where he gave his version of events. You can read the blog from that day here and the round-up here.

Anthony Ennis

On the 15th of July, Anthony Ennis – the man who drove the car the bullet was fired from – gave his evidence. You can read about that here.

He was then cross-examined on Monday the 19thand Tuesday the 20th.

There were no proceedings in court on Friday, July 16.
